The Barrett family lives a normal suburban life until a series of disturbing events begin to occur. Pictures go missing from frames, furniture is rearranged, and the youngest son, Sam, starts having conversations with an imaginary friend. As the events escalate from prank-ish to violent, the family realizes they are being targeted by something not of this world.

In the film's climax, the family prepares to defend Sam, the youngest, whom they believe is the target because of his nightmares about the "Sandman". However, the "deep" horror reveals itself when the Grays take Jesse, the older son, instead. The story ends on a chilling note as Sam hears Jesse’s voice through a walkie-talkie, suggesting that while Jesse is gone, he is still being "observed" or used by the visitors.
