The movie takes place in 180 AD, during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris). Maximus, a renowned Roman general, is tasked with leading the Roman legions to victory against the Germanic tribes. However, Commodus, Aurelius's son, is jealous of Maximus's popularity and plots against him. Commodus murders Aurelius and declares himself Emperor, ordering Maximus's execution. Maximus escapes and is sold into slavery, where he becomes a gladiator.
