The story is set in 1971 Virginia, a time when racial tensions were at a boiling point due to the integration of black and white schools. The plot follows Coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) as he is hired over the local favorite, Coach Yoast (Will Patton), to lead the newly integrated T.C. Williams High School football team.
