Set in 1954, the story follows U.S. Marshal (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) as they arrive at Ashecliffe Hospital, a fortress-like asylum for the criminally insane on the remote Shutter Island . They are there to investigate the mysterious disappearance of Rachel Solando, a patient who vanished from a locked room.
