He is a man torn between his spiritual duties (which he often disregards) and his fierce, almost animalistic desire to establish a dynasty for his children. The series does not shy away from his corruption, but it juxtaposes it with his genuine charisma and administrative competence. He is shown as a Pope who actually secured the borders of the Papal States and brought a measure of order to chaos, complicating the viewer’s desire to simply hate him.
