The salesman enters the booth to find a mountain of inside-out lace, tangled thongs, and—worst of all—hooks snagged into the delicate mesh of neighboring garments. Untangling a $200 bodysuit from a silk robe without tearing either is a feat of engineering that requires the steady hands of a neurosurgeon. 3. The Myth of the "Standard" Size
The second circle of hell involves the male companion. He is never there to help. He sits on the spindly velvet stool outside the fitting room, holding a purse, scrolling sports scores, radiating the energy of a hostage.
Modern lingerie is engineering. A single garment may include: convertible straps, removable pads, J-hooks for racerback, front closure, side boning, and three different sets of hook-and-eye settings. To the untrained eye, it is a spiderweb of elastic and regret.
